ABA Therapy Billing Services for Independent Providers
ABA practices need billing work that accounts for payer requirements, documented services and a clear division of responsibilities. Matrix provides U.S.-based medical billing support. Talk with us about your ABA practice’s payer mix, systems and service needs so we can confirm the appropriate scope before you engage us.
Matrix has served independent practices nationwide since 2007, from Mesa, Arizona.

Where ABA billing needs careful coordination
Authorization requirements
ABA authorization requirements vary by health plan. When authorization is required, practices need to track approved service codes, units and dates, and request changes or renewals when needed. Claims outside the authorization’s scope may be denied. Authorization does not guarantee payment.
For example, TRICARE’s Autism Care Demonstration has its own referral and preauthorization process. Optum’s authorization guidance directs providers to verify the member’s specific benefits and requirements. Neither is a universal rule for all ABA claims.
Codes, units and documentation
Check the applicable code, time or unit requirements, modifiers and supporting documentation. Track services against the approved scope where authorization applies. A single total of approved hours may not capture code-specific or date-specific limits.
Provider and payer requirements
Professional certification, payer credentialing, network participation and patient-specific treatment authorization are separate matters. Confirm the requirements for the rendering provider, supervisor and billing arrangement under the applicable plan.
Coverage and plan variation
Review the patient’s benefits and the payer’s current rules. Coverage criteria, service settings and documentation requirements can differ by program and plan. Do not apply one payer’s rule to every claim.
Filing and renewal dates
Track claim-filing deadlines separately from authorization expiration and renewal dates. Assign an owner to each follow-up and confirm the result after a submission or request.

Discuss a billing scope for your ABA practice
Matrix’s medical billing services include claims, payment posting, denial follow-up, patient statements and reporting. During an introductory conversation, review which services fit your ABA practice and the responsibilities that remain with your clinical and administrative teams.
- Claims to primary and secondary payers.
- Payment posting and adjustments.
- Denial follow-up and appeals under the applicable payer’s guidelines.
- Patient statements and balance follow-up.
- Monthly reporting and access to billing reports.
- Separately scoped credentialing and payer enrollment.
Confirm responsibility for authorization requests, utilization tracking and renewals before services begin. These tasks should not be assumed to be included in a billing arrangement.
